Crooked Dice Treant

Amongst the many items I bought from Crooked Dice at SELWG was one of their Treant figures.

As supplied and on a Renedra round 50mm base, it stands about 75mm tall, however as this will probably be part of a unit of three, I wanted to add some difference between the figures.

Cunningly, I also had the Dead Forest set. For this figure, I added one of the loose branches into a hole drilled into the left shoulder/back of the figure, then blended it in with some Milliput. I also turned the head slightly further than the designer intended with some judicious filing and further Milliput.

This will function as a large creature for one of my Elf or Elf aligned armies
The figure was undercoated with Citadel Chaos Black. It was then given a further coat of Vallejo Black applied with a large brush and a touch of water to ensure it was entirely black.

Next a mixture of Citadel Dryad Bark and Vallejo Black was brushed over it.
This was followed by heavy dry brush of a mixture of Citadel Dryad Bark and Vallejo Black Grey.
Another dry brush with the Citadel Dryad Bark lightened with Vallejo London Grey.
Finally, dry brushing with Citadel Terminatus Stone was followed by a wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade.
The Bracket Fungus on the right leg was painted with Citadel Rakash Flesh.
The eyes were first painted Humbrol acrylic white followed by Citadel Hexwraith Flame for the glowing green look.
Unlike most of my Oathmark figures, this has been based with slightly more temperate locations in mind. The base was painted with Humbrol Acrylic 29 Dark Earth and dry brushed with Citadel Terminatus Stone. Various Gamer's Grass tufts were added.

Irongate Scenery Ballista

One of the companies at SELWG 2021 was Irongate Scenery. One item that caught my eye was their Ballista. It comes without a crew, but I'm going to use some Oathmark Humans to build the crew.

It is rather large for Oathmark, being approximately 55mm across the front.
The bolt is approximately the same length as an Oathmark Human Infantry spear, so some of the unused spears are going to be used for some spare ammunition.
The string needs to be added, I will drill out the block behind the bolt to take the string.

Cactus Patch

Having bought Dead Man's Hand, and previously Wild West Exodus, I needed some scenery.

At SELWG, I bought another pack of Dead Man's Hand Cacti and some Products For Wargamers MDF scatter terrain bases.

The edges ofmthe base were filed to a slope.
Some rocks were sculpted using Milliput and the bases removed from the cacti with a razor saw.
A mixture of granite ballast and Woodland Scenics fine Cinder Ballast was applied over PVA glue to texture the base. This was undercoated first with Halfords Grey Primer, then Citadel Zandri Dust spray.
The cacti were painted Army Painter Army Green, dry brushed with Citadel Nurgle Green and shaded with Citadel Coelian Greenshade. They were then dry brushed again with Citadel Nurgle Green and lightly with Citadel Terminatus Stone.
The base was then dry brushed with Citadel Terminatus Stone.
Gamer's Grass tufts were added to break up the open space.
Jesse James takes cover amongst the cacti.

Frank James also makes use of the cover.

More cacti here.

Other rules from SELWG 2021

At SELWG I bought Five Parsecs From Home, a set of solo play SF rules.

The rules are designed to allow you to tell a story involving your band of rogues, roughens or heroes. Though it can be used just to fight battles, the main selling point is the campaign system. I will be discussing this more in a later post.

The other set of rules is Dead Mans Hand. This is a set of Wild West rules, and I bought them as the Greenhorn Set, including the rules, the markers and cards plus a box of ten plastic multi-part Gunslingers.

More on these rules in a later post.

Ghost Archipelago Tribals

One of the plastic figure ranges produced for Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago was the Tribals. These are unarmoured and equipped with Stone Age weapons.

They will represent lower tech groups in SF games as well as for Oathmark in warmer climes.

Crooked Dice Treasure Piles - part one

So SELWG 2021 was my first opportunity to rummage through the new Crooked Dice Fantasy range.

They have a large selection of objective or treasure tokens, and this set is the Treasure Pile.

Each of the tokens has a number to identify it.

They are going to be glued to Renedra 25mm bases, so these photographs should allow me to match pile to number, just in case it is relevant.

I sometimes wonder why I keep buying them...

At SELWG 2021 I bought the Sisters of Talliareum female paladins

Previously I had bought their Shield Maiden box (back in 2017), and not been impressed, so I am not sure why I bought these.

There are five sprues in the box - two of one kind and three of the other.

I have one partially assembled figure but I am finding it hard to summon the enthusiasm to finish it.

Armed Shuttle from Sammy Scenics

At SELWG Sammy Scenics had a stand selling 3D printed vehicles and scenery.

One of the items (labelled Vando's Shuttle) caught my eye.

It comes in five parts - main hull, cockpit, scanner turret, dish back and dish.
There are print lines, and I have yet to work out what to do with them. I might try applying some fine "wet and dry" to smooth them out.

It looks like it will assemble into a nice (and sizeable) model. The body and cockpit are hollow so it is not too heavy.

It will make a nice centrepiece for Srgrave or Five Parsecs From Home games.

Wargames Atlantic Cannon Fodder

Wargames Atlantic have recently released a box of thirty 28mm lightly armed and armoured troops labelled as Cannon Fodder.

They are sculpted to be suitable as Imperial Guard, Colonial Marines, Penal troops (bareheaded with explosive collars) or anyone else who is dressed in a boiler suit/coverall.
There are four different head types (helmet, kepi, hostile environment and bare head with collar)

They are slighter than the Stargrave miniatures and have one kneeling figure per sprue.
Cannon Fodder compared to Spacegrave Trooper.

And because it is a contractual obligation, compared with William Killian.

SELWG 2021 - The First Show of the year (and for years)

What with "one thing and another", it has been a long time since I got to visit a show.

SELWG took place at Picketts Lock, North London on the 17th of October.

It was slightly smaller than I remember at Crystal Palace but it was good to see those that attended.

More on the new toys when the light is better.

One of the games on display was the South London Warlords and their large scale Stingray game.

More Minions

 Another patrolling Minion.

Crooked Dice Minion with SMG and the SAS Gas Mask head.

Of course the Minions are there to protect their employer's interests, and Technicians are there to do the research.

This technician has his clipboard and a sealed case. But what is in the case?
