Heroics and Ros 6mm Modern British

Way back in 2019 I bought a number of items from Heroics and Ros at Colours.

Four years later I thought I would base some of the figures.

While the Challenger and Challenger 2 rules from way back when used rectangular bases, I thought I would see what the figures looked like on circular bases.

A strip of H&R M12 Modern British and a Renedra 20mm circular base.

For rules such as PSC's NORTHAG, a base contains four figures. Four figures from the strip, GPMG and three riflemen, were cut off and glued to the base.

The figure bases were smoothed in by the traditional application of Milliput.
Once set, it was undercoated with Citadel Chaos Black.

The base was painted with Humbrol 29 Earth Brown.
The figures were painted with Citadel Karak Stone. The flesh was painted with Citadel Bugman Glow.
Citadel Death World Forest and Steel Legion Drab was applied as stripes, mainly on the helmets.
The barrels of the rifles and the GPMG were painted black.
Citadel Agrax Earthshade was then applied.
Woodlands Scenics Burnt Grass Turf was then glued to the base.

Crooked Dice Wraiths, and how to base slotta base figures for Oathmark etc.

Way back when, the new way to base figures was the  slot base, each figure had a tab (or in some cases tabs) which were fitted into a plastic base with a slot in it. Gone were the days of random sized bases or having to cut regular sized bases from plastic card, or using washers.

This was fine, except the base was four to six millimetres tall, and contributed a great deal to the height of  figure.

Renedra introduced a range of plastic bases less than 2mm high. These were regular in size and height. Combined with plastic figures, it made basing easier. Admittedly the figures might have puddle bases, so some Milliput would be required.

But how do you use slot base figures with them?

There are three ways.

First, cut the tab off, file the feet flat and use a pin.

Two William Killian.
Second, cut a slot in the base and trim the tab.

Another Crooked Dice figure, this time an X-Commando (with a police woman head).

The third is to build up a slot with some plastic. Two pieces of sufficient thickness will do, but for the Barrow Wraiths I decided I wanted a bit more regularity, so it was back to the Renedra bases, in this case the 20mm one.

Renedra 20mm base on top of a 25mm base.
The 20mm base was cut in two (each one was cut so the figure would be as central as possible on the 25mm base. The larger piece was glued to the base and while it dried the tab was held in place and the second pice added. Once it was holding, the tab was removed, creating a suitable sized slot. Once set, the tab was glued into the slot.
Cutting down the tab makes the figure sit moree flat on the base, the one of the right will need quite a bit more milliput.

Viewed from above shows the asymmetric cut.

Renedra 20 foot container as cover

I reviewed the Renedra 20 foot container earlier , but mentioned that I would take some photographs of the container in use as cover.

Renedra 20 foot container

At Salute, Renedra released their injection moulded 20 and 40 foot containers (plus barrels and pallets).

I bought two of their 20 foot container packs.

The
The pack builds two containers with opening doors and four pallets.
Each container requires three sprues - top and bottom sprue; sides sprue; end and doors sprue.

What is not clear from the instructions is that the sides sit on top of the base, not on the outside. The fit is good once you work out how the bits go together, however there is no assistance in holding the walls together (it does require at least three hands to balance them).
Once assembled, it looks like a corrugated container.
A nice detail is their is a ventilator on one side.
The end brackets - which in real life are used to attach them to a wagon or lorry, or to hold them together when stacking - are lacking in detail, and the normal slots (which are used by the big fork lid trucks) are missing. However, these are gaming pieces and not model railway
The door detail is good, and the doors open and the interior walls are detailed.

This one has been undercoated with Citadel Chaos Black spray, then Citadel Corax White.
I do need to get some suitable decals, probably from model railway suppliers.

Comparison shots

Ainsty (~1/62), Renedra (1/56), Unknown but either 1/48 or 1/50,  O Gauge (1/43)

Of course, there is always a need for something to carry it.

I am thinking of trying to extend a Crooked Dice Tortuga lorry. The container fits in the flat bed. I could probably do with another set of wheels as well as extending the frames.

Renedra Viking House

At Salute 2021 I bought a double pack of Renedra Viking Houses.

This is a multi-part hard plastic kit that makes a Viking house, plus two beds and an assortment of pots and bowls.
The kit is comprised of two identical sprues that make up the roof and the beds.

And one sprue that has the base and the ends.

I have not added the roof cross pieces or the top of the thatch yet. The roof is removable.
The building is rather small compared to historical examples, and maybe would be a more portable example (the end pieces look like wattle) that would be set up for a season and then dismantled. The archer is a Fireforge Almughavar with Oathmark Human Infantry arms.

More ruins for Frostgrave

This is another of the Renedra Ruins (frame A). This is based on a Renedra oval base.

As supplied it is slightly longer than the base, so I cut the end of the wall off and rotated it by 90 degrees.
The gaps where the parts were cut off were filled with Milliput.

Platikote Rust Effect spray paint was used as a base coat toggle the surfaces some texture. It was then sprayed with Citadel Chaos Black.
The whole thing was dry brushed with Citadel Mechanicus Grey, followed by Citadel Terminatus Stone.
And here it is with some Gnolls.
The Gnoll Linebreaker skirts the ruin.
